How to Achieve the Emo Hair Look

'Emo' is short for, yep, you guessed it - emotion. This has turned into a subculture many teenagers and early twenties people follow. The stereotypical emo is a rebellious, self-injuring dramatic and confused teenager; however, the truth is far from that. As mentioned before, emo is a subculture. However, does not each subculture have a style? Needless to say, hair is by far the true emo's strength by far. So many ways to compromise the hair, and to tease it to whatever you may like. Just how do you get emo hair?

First off, let the hair grow out. You want it to be longer than what you will get it to cut to. Secondly, layer the hair. Choppy, uneven layers are perfect for this particular style because later on, styling it will be much more fun. Thirdly, to maintain your cut, you will want to razor your hair occasionally. No, we don't mean to use a shaving razor - instead, use an actual salon razor tool; otherwise it will damage the hair.

When it comes to styling your tresses, you want to be extra careful. You do not want hair that is damaged beyond repair, do you? Exactly, and since you will be using a straightener, you will want to take good care of your hair by using head defense shampoo's and sprays. Remember this when styling your locks emo: the straighter, the better.

Next up is the color of your hair. Emo styling is very open due to the subculture being all about individuality. For your base color, you should do naturals, seeing as how they are very simply changed by other colors. Blonde, black, or browns are perfect, though you should keep highlights out of the equation. After the base, you should most definitely get random streaks of pink, blue or green in your hair. If your parents are less than pleased with this idea, simply get semi-permanent hair dye, or colored hair extensions. Framing your face with a different color hair is common - but again, isn't this about being different? Any hue would be ideal for this particular style. Why not use purple? Or maybe some red?

Accessorizing your hair is on the agenda after the dying. One thing you want to be careful about is: seeming like a poser - or maybe you just don't care. Style your hair emo during the course of a few weeks if you do care. When you choose just which accessories you would like to use, go for bats and spiders. If you are a girl, go for a girly bow! To put it simply: when styling your emo hair, do what you want!
